Lawyers vs Marketers

Would Band-Aid ever want people to start ask for "adhesive bandages"? How about pass the transparent tape, instead of Scotch tape? And the people at S. C. Johnson & Son, wouldn't they want customers covering their food in Saran Wrap, instead of plastic wrap? Well, according to two of the best regionizable brands they shouldn't.

The lawyers at both Google and Apple and trying to actually to prevent people from using the words that helped make them famous. Google's have now taken over the marketing department and is going to "crack down" on people using phrase as a verb such as "I'll Google it". The company reportedly stated that such phrases could potentially damage its brand?

Apple on the other hand, you think would be thrilled to have people call all mp3 players iPods, is reportedly attempting not only to monopolize the mp3 player market, but also the word "pod". Their legal team is trying to "protect" the iPod by sending threats to companies that use the word pod in their products.

Let's just hope Google won't be too upset when we start "yahooing for that recipe" and downloading those "MSRSS Casts" to our "Zune".

The world's first advertising campaign that makes no sense.

Well, it appears those silly people at Sony are just incapable of letting bad ideas go. Yes people, it's back, "The World's First Television for Men and Women™". Yes Virginia, that is trademarked.

Last summer Sony launched a new line of high-definition televisions under the sub-brand BRAVIA. The idea was to attract women to the HDTV market (mostly men are buying high-definition televisions). A hugh campaign was launched, Sony bought up every advertising space on Style.com, every commercial spot on the Tonight Show. The tag-line "Finally, The World's First Television for Men and Women". Well, apparently the men and women were not aware of the need for a unisex television and the campaign was killed less than a week after it launch. I give Sony credit for admitting the mistake and pulling the campaign so quickly, but why now bring this confusing campaign back?

Sony has been going through some tuff times lately, and solving the imaginary problem of a lack televisions for both boys and girls with BRAVIA isn't going to make life easier for Sony anytime soon.

Google Gobbled Up My Spreadsheet

Okay, Just this morning, when I got into the office and opened Google Spreadsheets to view ad specs for an upcoming advertising campaign that I'm working on, I received a network disconnect error in the Google application. Alright, strange but alright. So when I logged back into my account and tried and open my file, NOTHING, gone, no spreadsheets I saved at all.

When Google launched this new service I was very excited, my work with spreadsheets is mainly just viewing them, and not being forced to launch Excel really lured me to try it out. But after this I'll be (and I recommend others as well) very cautious on what I put on their network, and to keep files locally on my machine.

Some variation on the same piece. I was experimenting with some blurs (obviously), zoom blurs from different center points. I got some pretty interesting results. The lightning one was named because last night in my area we got some thunder showers, but mostly lightning.

Some dramatic colors
This was an exercise in creating illustrated photographic / abstract design work using very large photography. The original was around 1600x1200.

Also I wanted to mention where I get a lot on my stock photos. There is a free (mostly) stock photography site called Stock.XCHNG. I was launched in 2001 for people to exchange photos. You can contribute your own photos for fellow designers to use, you can use other peoples photos, it's really a great site. Time for Yourself

There was an interesting article from A List Apart about the four day week. Now this is not a new concept, but it got me thinking about what I spend time on, what I should be spending time on, and what I would like to be spending time on. The basic theme of the article is that there is never enough time in a week to accomplish everything a person "needs" to do and that working more hours isn't enough. I would like to talk a little about what you want to do and then give some suggestion on how to make that happen.

Just this week I decided to restart the blog, It's something that I really wanted to do but I never had the time to really make a cool page layout and gather up some of my best work and write some kick ass articles, I was pretty much trying to make it perfect. Well, I decided that it's never going to be perfect and that shouldn't stop me or anyone else to get their work out there, take up a hobby, or anything that one has been wanting to do.

The one quote that I really like was this "there will always be more to do. Working more won’t change that". Myself, and I'm sure many others, can relate to that in some of the personal projects we want to do. So it basically comes down to, there is not enough time, are you still going to do it or not.

This one I was going after an almost screened on canvas look (if that makes any sense). I was trying to use a minimum of colors and a rough look and feel.

Flower is still a work in progress. I want to bring it into After Effects (maybe Motion) and create some kind of a subtle dimention to this. This was orginally created to be desktop wallpaper but never went anywhere.

Another experimental one here. I was really happy how this turned out, with the roughness of the projector and the bright whites as if the film is being burnt by the bulb.

This is a experimental project (I think that's going to be a theme here) that was created in Photoshop using photographs of an Apple mouse, Palm, a factory as-well-as other various objects, then using layer blend modes to create an abstract high contrast type of effect.

Hello everyone, this is Atticus Yokitis and this is relaunch of my blog. I had a hard time sticking with it last time so I decided to start posting a lot of my side projects and things I do in my free time. I haven't designed my layout for the blog yet but I just wanted to get something up here. The first piece that will be up shortly is titled Shimmer.
